2015 Travel Year In Review

Well, it's the last day of 2015, and we've had another amazing year. Click here for the 2014 recap.

Since my father's an Asian math nerd, according to his excel spreadsheet, I have:

1. Flown approximately 33,825 miles this year (vs. 51,422 last year)
2. Taken 23 flight segments (vs. 26 last year) with only 2 longer than 8 hours
3. Flown out of 14 airports (vs. 16 last year)
4. On 2 different airlines (vs. 6 last year)
5. Traveled to 4 foreign countries (vs. 6 last year)
6. Earned United Silver status

The biggest takeaways were that we really decided to stay "local" this year oftentimes driving instead of flying. Further, unlike 2013 and 2014, we only left the country a few times in 2015. Once was a spring break to Cancun. Then we had our annual trip to visit extended family Israel (stopping in Belgium on the way home). The other was our early Christmas trip to Costa Rica a few weeks ago.

On the hotel side, we have:

1. Stayed 52 nights in hotels this year
2. Across 20 different cities
3. In 14 unique hotel brands

Our most frequent brand was Westin (18 nights across Orlando, suburban Chicago, Cancun, Kansas City and Scottsdale). We re-qualified for Starwood Platinum status, and matched to Hyatt Diamond and Hilton Diamond statuses for 2016. And we didn't realize until just now that this year we went to see baseball games at the stadiums for each of the World Series teams, the Kansas City Royals and the New York Mets.

So as we close out the year, here's a photo snapshot of our favorite lapchild adventures this year.

Thanks, United for the 5 Upgrades!

Flight #122 - United Airlines 1446
Liberia (LIR) – Newark (EWR)
Friday, December 18, 2015
Depart: 2:50PM / Arrive: 8:30PM
Duration: 4hr 40min
Aircraft: Boeing 737
Seat: 1B, 1E, 1F, 4A and 4B (Business)
Flown: 2,186 miles
Lifetime Miles: 224,098 miles

This is one of the few times I've flown with extended family. We all started on one single reservation with 2 of us having United Gold status (my father and my grandmother) while my mother and I having United Silver status and my aunt with no status whatsoever.

We originally booked this flight a few months ago on a great $266 fare they were having. For a roundtrip from Newark to Liberia that was a steal! So as our Costa Rican adventure came to a close, we starting preparing for our return home.

When we checked in online yesterday, we saw that there were only 5 people booked for Business Class out of a total 16 available seats. So we took our chances and put ourselves on the upgrade list. The seats themselves weren't the great lay-flat ones, but this would get us a free lunch on board instead of paying $9 for a slice of Costa Rican airport pizza.

The downside case would be that we'd have 5 separate reservations now, instead of being all in a single booking. Should there be any flight changes, there's a chance we'd each be rebooked on different flights, but given the weather didn't seem to be bad, we took those odds.

Probably because they had United status on their booking, my parents and my grandmother each cleared the upgrade list shortly after checking in last night. They were going to be sitting up front, but my aunt (no status) and me (United Silver, but not using it on this booking) were still on the Upgrade Waitlist. However, we were #1 and #2, respectively, with still another 5 big seats available. As you can see, we didn't stress out about it.

So this afternoon, we headed over to the airport like usual. When we arrived at the gate, the agent gave us 2 new tickets with our upgrade. Score!

United Silver Status for Everyone

Flight #119 - United Airlines 2020
Newark (EWR) – Ft Lauderdale (FLL)
Thursday, December 3, 2015
Depart: 11:31AM / Arrive: 2:36PM
Duration: 3hr 5min
Aircraft: Boeing 737
Seat: 10D, 10E and 10F (Economy)
Earned: 1,065 miles
Lifetime Miles: 217,661 miles

My father has held United Gold status since 2010. Having status has dramatically improved our travel experiences, from getting access to free Same Day Changes and 2 free Economy Plus seats at booking. There are other perks as well, but those are less valuable or can be replicated through other means (credit cards benefits).

But this year, we didn't fly as much internationally so it was difficult for him to reach 50,000 miles flown on United or Star Alliance carriers. Even with his extra 5,000 Premier Qualifying Miles earned from his Chase United Select credit card, he would only get to 36,000 miles. So he would have to be content with falling back to United Silver status (which you earn after 25,000 miles).

However, for yours truly, it would be my first time ever having United Silver status. You might be surprised about that since I've already flown 217,661 miles in my 4 years of life. But here's why I'm only now reaching United Silver.

1. For the first two years (2012-2013), I flew as a lapchild (hence the name of the blog). Those flights didn't earn me any elite miles at all since for most of them, I didn't even have to pay (except small % for international flights).

2. After I turned 2 years old (2014), I was ineligible to fly as a lapchild and started earning frequent flyer miles. However, my family focused on having me earn Aegean Airlines miles (instead of United) to get "lifetime" Gold status with their Miles & Bonus frequent flyer program.

3. After earning "lifetime" Aegean Gold in June 2014, I started flying on award tickets (which don't earn frequent flyer miles).

4. I only started earning United miles in October 2014 on our trip to the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta (way too late in the calendar year to reach 25,000).

Long story short, 2015 would be the year that I'd finally earn United Silver status. And with our touchdown yesterday afternoon at Ft Lauderdale, I had 25,191 miles earned this year.

Coincidentally, this FLL flight was also the flight where my mother re-qualified for her United Silver status as well. So now the 3 of us in the family all have United Silver from now through Feb 2017.

High Spend Targets

As you know, we accumulate a lot of our frequent flyer miles, hotel points and bank reward points through credit cards.

Most of the benefit, however, comes from initially signing up and reaching the minimum spend (which ranges from $1,000-5,000 within 3 months most of the time).

Some also offer perks just for having the card (priority hotel elite status, priority boarding on airlines).

Then there's the spending bonuses for using your card at certain merchant types (2-5x at groceries, office supply stores, hotels).

The fourth type of benefit is for reaching high levels of spend in a given year. These targets have rewards that are very attractive to people like my father who enjoy gaming the system. There are several cards that have these high spend targets, but we'll only discuss the ones my parents have actively. You can research the rest on your own.

Chase Select Visa - $25,000
For example, for spending $25,000 a year on our Chase United Select Visa allows United MileagePlus members to avoid the Premier Qualifying Dollar (PQD) threshold for earning elite status. Normally to hit United Silver, you'd have to fly 25,000 miles AND spend at least $3,000 in base fares.

Given we take advantage of super cheap fares (such as the $815 fare to NYC from Tel Aviv or the $266 flights to Costa Rica), we hardly ever reached the PQD minimums for United Silver or Gold status.

Citi Hilton Reserve Visa - $10,000
Another example is the $10,000 spend on the Citi Hilton Reserve Visa. For doing so, we get a free Hilton Weekend Night Certificate good for just about ANY Hilton property in the world.

Last year, we used it for my grandmother's stay at the Conrad Hong Kong). Normally, the Conrad Hong Kong would cost 80,000 Hilton HHonors points, so this certificate was a great value for my family. And since we hit $10,000 this year as well, we'll get another free weekend night certificate to use in 2016.

And if we ever hit $40,000 in a year, we'd get upgraded to top tier Hilton Diamond status. That sounds pretty amazing, but we question if the incremental benefits of being Diamond (vs. a mid-tier Gold which already gets you free breakfasts) is worth it. After all, that's an extra $30k of spend we'd have to forego on our other cards.

Starwood SPG American Express - $30,000
Our Starwood SPG American Express also offers mid-tier SPG Gold status if you spend $30,000 in a year. For late checkout and a modest room upgrade to a better view, it's a nice mid-tier status to have.

But since my father has Platinum status, we don't go out of our way to hit this SPG Amex high spend goal -- though admittedly, some years we hit it without actively trying to do so.

Citi Thank You Prestige Mastercard - $15,000
This card doesn't really fall into the same category as the others. Rather than being a recurring high spend benefit, the Citi Thank You Prestige card offer we received when we signed up was as follows: 30,000 Thank You points after spending $3,000 in 3 months PLUS another 30,000 TY points for spending $15,000 in the first 12 months.

The "regular" offer is 50,000 miles after spending $3,000 with a $450 annual fee, but my father wanted the special $350 annual fee offer which happened to be the 60k points for $15k spend in the first year offer.

Conclusion
Having been fortunate enough to hit both the United Visa and Hilton Reserve Visa targets earlier this 2015 year, now we can focus our extra spend on the $15,000 target for the Citi Thank You Prestige Mastercard over the next 11 months, having already hit the $3,000 first target in Month 1.

But as soon as January 1, 2016 comes around, we're back to the races with the United and Hilton Reserve Visa cards. Thank goodness for being able to use our 5 Nationwide Buxx cards to load/unload $5,000 each month.

Costa Rica Surprise Trip

I've been working pretty hard at my Pre-K class these days. So when my father found a great $266 fare to Costa Rica in early December, I told him to jump on it!

Friday morning, my father checked his blogs and saw The Flight Deal had just announced a great United fare for a nonstop flight from Newark to Liberia, Costa Rica.

My father immediately ran to my mother (who gets final sign off for all big decisions in the family) and surprisingly, she agreed!

The downside is that I'll have to miss a week of school, because the special prices were only available before my School Winter Break (between Christmas and New Years).

But that would also mean that we'll be able to get into the hotel of our choice (Andaz Peninsula Papagayo Resort), and it likely wouldn't be overly crowded with pasty New Yorkers.

We also decided to invite my aunt and grandmother to make it an "early Christmas vacation" for the extended Songer family.

However, since we were getting fares for just $266/person round trip, it wasn't as big of a hit to our wallet as a Christmas vacation would have been. Direct flights on 12/26-1/1 were going for $1,300/person, whereas we purchased 5 round trip tickets for $1,330 total!

Combined with the fact that a few months ago we were able to pre-purchase $900 worth of United travel credit for $675 (Amex Offer for $75 off $300 purchases), that meant we were actually getting our nonstop flights for just $221 per person!

Thank you, Flight Deal! Now back to my Pre-K homework assignment.

Maternal Grandmother's Visit

We just booked my maternal grandmother a trip to visit us from Israel for most of November.

This week, Israel's national airline, El Al, announced a Winter sale for travel to/from the United States. Normally, non-stop flights cost anywhere from $1,200-1,400 per person.

However, El Al was offering them for as low as $815. And guess what? United decided to match them!

So we confirmed prices and dates on United.com and then went to Citi Thank You's travel portal to book using our valuable Citi Thank You points. We redeemed 65,148 TY Points from my mother's account at 1.25 cents/pt, saving us $815.

Additionally, it pretty much clears her Citi Thank You account of all her points, so we can close her $95/year Citi TY Premier card next time the annual fee comes up.

But I'm more focused on getting to see my grandmother again. We usually only see each other once a year, so I'm happy I get to see her again. And we can show her an American Thanksgiving!

Small In Flight Mini-Hack

Now that we travel as a family of 3, we usually get seat assignments where we take up the entire row on one side of the aisle.

Our favorite seats are 8A, 8B and 8C which is the second row in Economy. As we've mentioned in the past, we dislike sitting by the bulkhead due to (a) the lack of floor storage space and (b) the trays being in the unmovable arm rests.

So when we settle into row 8, my mother and I usually fight over who gets the window seat, with the loser having to sit by my father in the middle seat. He often takes the aisle seat so he can jump into the aisle and position himself as soon as the seatbelt lights turn off when we land.

With the tight spacing between rows, getting in and out of your seat is always tough, even when you're less than 5'6" like my parents. And it's especially difficult when the tray tables are out and someone has to use the bathroom. Oftentimes, we move the arm rests up to allow us more maneuverability.

However, ever notice that the arm rest by the aisle always seems to be locked in position? Wouldn't it be great if you were able to swivel this arm rest up as well?

Well, my father knows how! Voila! Now sliding out of your seat is that much easier, especially when your tray is down.

The trick is the small button seen here towards the base (bottom) of the arm rest. By pressing that button, the arm rest unlocks and you're able to lift it up. You're welcome.

Columbus Day Weekend Trip

Flight #114 - United Airlines 1929
Newark (EWR) – Phoenix (PHX)
Friday, October 9, 2015
Depart: 4:30PM / Arrive: 6:58PM
Duration: 5hr 28min
Aircraft: Boeing 737
Seat: 15D, 15E and 15F (Economy)
Earned: 2,133 miles
Lifetime Miles: 212,705 miles

After a long 3 month hiatus, we're flying again. Since our last trip to Israel in June, it's been a summer full of road trips (Seasame Place, North Fork, Sunflower Farms and Niagara Falls).

This long weekend, however, we're back to TSA screenings, boarding gates and seatback trays. Recall, my father used Google Flights to find a destination that met a few criteria: (a) enough miles to qualify for United Silver status through Feb 2017 and (b) a reasonable price.

So later this week, we'll be on our way to Phoenix...well Scottsdale to be more precise. There we're doing nothing but relaxing. After all, we already visited the area almost 2 years ago as my last flight as an official lap child:
So this time around, we're not leaving the resort at all.

In fact, we're skipping the car rental and just taking an UberX from the Airport. Per the Uber Phoenix website, it estimates the ride will take about 30 minutes and cost about $25-33.

Actually, it will be $20-27 after our 20% rebate from CapitalOne. Even after our return ride on Monday, it will still be much cheaper than the cost to rent a car for 3 days just to have it sit in the parking lot while we park ourselves in an inner tube all weekend.
